Selling on eBay is fun and it's a great way to earn extra money. In fact, some people even earn a living by selling on eBay. Up to date, eBay is still one of the most popular visited websites in the world, they have massive traffic for several different niches and they have a ton of done for you services that make the sales process easier and semi-automated. Although selling on eBay is easier than some other options out there, there are a few things that you need to know before you sell on eBay.
1) Research your Market
The first thing you should do is research the Market and try to see which items are more popular than others? You can do that by using eBaysaurus, a free keyword research tool that that shows the phrases costumers search for. eBaysaurus will help you pick the right niche for you and allow you to optimize your products description later on. Another tool I love to use is amazon best sellers. Even though it's not an eBay tool it can give you a clue to which items are more popular online.
2) Title with keyword
The title is the first thing buyers see, so choose your words wisely. To create a successful listing title, you can write a compelling title. Be descriptive and include popular key words. Try to use all 55 characters.
3) Attractive great picture
Include Professional imagery of your item. Oftentimes, when there are many listings of the same item on eBay, the highest ending price will belong not necessarily to the seller with the most experience, but to the seller with the most Professional image.
4) Sell the benefits not the features:
When people are deciding whether or not to buy something they make the decision with their emotions and then justify it to themselves afterwards. You need to bear this in mind when writing your item descriptions. Instead of just listing all the different features that your item has tell the buy how it will benefit them. Maybe it will save them time, give them hours of entertainment, save them money etc. Think of all the benefits and put them in your sales pitch, be honest though and do not make false claims.
5) Timing is key
People often like to bid on items near the end of the auction. Do not worry if your item does not seem to be attracting any bids. You will find that people will often only bid on your item on the last day and probably within the last few hours or minutes. Some bidders also practice €sniping', waiting until the last possible second before bidding. Schedule your auction to end at a time when the most people can bid. Listings that end on a Sunday afternoon - eBay's busiest day- are likely to get the most attention.
6) Avoid eBay account suspended
Know what you can't sell. There are forbidden products on eBay, some are more obvious than others. Check out Help -> Is My Item Allowed? to find out what eBay doesn't allow to be sold. Ignoring this can have your account suspended or even permanently banned.
7) Upgrade to eBay Store
In time you might consider opening a store on eBay. This may be attractive if you want people to be able to search via your own distinct URL on search engines, you want to group sales items together under unique categories of your own making and if you want to build a really interesting profile for your regular and other buyers. There are benefits such as longer term, lower fee €fixed price€ listings but these sales are only ever shown in your shop, not on the usual auction lists. Also, there is a monthly fee for owning a store or shop, which needs to be taken into account when selling your items. For a beginner seller, it's a good idea to check out other stores or shops first and to decide after some experience with selling whether or not a store or shop is for you.
